If you travel alone like me, then you know how hard it is to take good photos. Besides enjoying your vacation by immersing yourself in the destination and being in the moment, capturing good photos is the next best thing. After all, we live in a society that is all about posting good pictures while traveling. And just because you are a solo traveler does not mean you can’t capture those quality moments you’ll want to remember.
After traveling alone several times and returning from my trips without those moments captured, I thought to myself, “This is not fair! I wish I would not have been so scared to ask someone to take my picture!” Returning home with feelings of regret was getting old, so I knew I had to make a change. And the first change had to start within.
Get Comfortable Taking Pictures in Public
I believe the first hurdle that one must get over to take good photos while travel alone is being comfortable with being uncomfortable. It is definitely going to be uncomfortable at first and probably a few more times after that. However, you have to do what you have to do to capture those moments.
Of course, some people will look at you and stare and be curious as to what you are doing. Just remember this—you will never see those people again—but you will get to see those photos (if you capture them) over and over again. So, dig deep and find that confidence.
Set a Timer on Your Smartphone
One of the easiest ways to take photos while traveling alone is by using the timer on your smartphone. I am an Andriod gal, and the Galaxy S9+ has the option to set a timer for 2, 5, or 10 seconds. Setting the timer allows you to set up your phone, get into position, and have the camera snap the photo of you without pushing the button.
Use a Selfie Stick
Using a selfie stick is an excellent idea for capturing selfies, and it is a good tool to carry with you on your travels. One thing to keep in mind when using a selfie stick is that you do not want to use it for every single photo. If you do, once you sit down and go through your pictures, you will quickly find that all of your photos are close-up selfies and nothing else. While a selfie can assist in many situations, consider using a tripod so that you can get a wide array of angles, backgrounds, and different photo styles.
Use a Tripod or Smartphone Holder
I love the self-timer on the phone, and it helps when trying to take a photo, but sometimes a girl needs more than just a selfie. Sometimes you need to capture your surroundings, and having a tripod to hold your phone is a game-changer. It allows you to move around more freely and have more versatile photos than just selfies.
Remotely Control Your Camera on Your Smartphone
Adding a Bluetooth remote control in addition to the tri-pod or cellphone holder takes your solo picture taking to another level. These remotes are small, lightweight, and usually come with a wrist strap and keychain clip, making them easy to use. Just make sure you choose one that is compatible with your phone.
I do not travel anywhere without my tripod and remote control so that I can take photos wherever I go and in whatever type of situation. I am prepared to capture the moment.
Hire a Professional Photographer
Being a budget traveler, I suggest this be your last option. I hired a photographer on one of my vacations to Cabo San Lucas to get great photos and not have to take them on my own. I also wanted to experience having a professional at the destination taking pictures of me. While it was a fantastic experience, and the photoshoot was free, the cost of the photos made the whole experience very expensive.
Ask Someone to Take Your Photo
The classic pastime of asking someone to take a photo of you will never go out of style. Many people in the world understand the challenges of traveling alone or as a couple and needing someone to take a photo of them, so don’t be afraid to ask someone around you to assist you with capturing your moments.
Just remember to return the favor. Simply ask, “Would you like for me to take a photo of you, as well?” They may or may not need your assistance; however, offering your services in return will always be a friendly and considerate gesture.
Take a Shot
Having the tools you need to take good photos while traveling alone will make a difference. Being able to capture your moments and reminiscing and sharing your experiences with others through your photos is priceless.
Dig deep, find your confidence, sprinkle a little shamelessness on yourself, and gather the tools you need to take your photos. Get out there and capture those amazing pictures of yourself and your experiences.
