How to survive long-haul flights

How to survive long-haul flights

Blog, EJtheTravelDiva Blog, Travel Tips
My very first long-haul flight was to Germany, and I was completely unprepared.  I looked at this flight as being no different from a domestic flight from Nashville to California--of which I have done so many times.  However this time, I didn't sleep well, watched everything on the provided entertainment more than once, and was completely uncomfortable.  I couldn't wait to get off that plane! After my flight to Germany, I vowed that I would never make the same mistakes again.  After all, I am a Virgo, and we are usually prepared--if not, we will at least never make the same mistake twice.  So, on my next long-haul flight to Paris, I was more than prepared and felt that I hit preparation meter out of the park. Even more recently,…

5 Things You Should Never Put in Your Checked Bag

5 Things You Should Never Put in Your Checked Bag

Blog, EJtheTravelDiva Blog, Travel Tips
Being a travel agent, I have learned, through speaking with numerous clients, about their travels, that I take for granted that many people know.  For examples travel terms and rules.  I thought everyone knew the difference between carry-on and checked luggage.  However, I have come to realize that there are people, that don't travel often and are not familiar with those terms---knowledge some of us take for granted. Now there are rules to what you can put in your carry-on bag versus your checked bag.  The most common rule is the rule of 3, when it comes to liquids.  If you have 3 oz or less, it can go in your carry-on bag but if it is over 3 oz, it needs to go in your checked bag.  However, there…

Solo Cruising vs Group Cruising

Solo Cruising vs Group Cruising

I recently returned from a 7-day Eastern Caribbean Cruise on Carnival Glory with friends and family.  It was a great cruise in some amazing ports like Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, Grand Turk, and Dominican Republic. EJT 10 Reunion Group Cruise As I was on the cruise, with friends and family, I found myself constantly comparing the cruise experience with my previous cruise when I sailed alone.  I enjoy traveling with others, it is big fun with traveling in groups and I also prefer traveling solo, at times.  Some of the advantages of traveling by yourself are: You can go to bed at any time.  One of the most beneficial things of cruising alone is having the ability to go to bed when you please without guilt.  When traveling with others,…

15 Things To Do Before You Travel

15 Things To Do Before You Travel

Blog, EJtheTravelDiva Blog, Travel Tips
When you are planning to travel for vacation, there are so many things to do and remember to do before you depart. I like to start a checklist about two weeks ahead of time so that every time I think of something, I write it down and once I complete the task, I mark it off, making sure that I don’t miss anything from my checklist. I have a lot of things going on in my life, as many of us do, so a checklist helps to get things from your mind onto to paper and you can come back and visit it at a later date. Amongst the million things that I normally added to my checklist, here are a few things that will always be on my checklist…

African Americans Need Sunscreen Too

African Americans Need Sunscreen Too

Blog, EJtheTravelDiva Blog, Travel Tips
When I first started traveling, I didn't know the first thing about sunscreen nor did I think I needed it. I didn't grow up in an environment where we vacationed in the sun or where my parents were applying sunscreen on me every couple of hours. Therefore, when I became an adult, with my own money and developed my passion for traveling, sunscreen was not on my packing list. After a couple of beach vacations, I started to realize that I was getting sunburned. I found that my chest was extremely red and when I showered, it was very painful. It then dawned on me, one day, that I was sunburned. I was amazed because, I am sure, like many African-Americans, we don't believe we can be sunburned. Well you…

8 Ways to Be a Good Travel Companion

8 Ways to Be a Good Travel Companion

Blog, EJtheTravelDiva Blog, Travel Tips
Over the past couple of decades, my friends and I have done a lot of traveling together.  I have traveled with friends who like to ball out of control and those who have absolutely no money and don’t tell you until you arrive at the destination.  I’ve traveled with neat and tidy friends and friends that are extremely messy.  I’ve shared a room with self-aware friends and friends that have no clue they are annoying to share a room with.  After traveling with so many different types of friends, I have put together a few suggestions on how you can be a good travel companion: Be your best self inside the room.  You are sharing a small space with someone for several days.  Everything you do in the privacy of…

Solo Cruising Day 4: Thrills and Chills

Solo Cruising Day 4: Thrills and Chills

Blog, EJtheTravelDiva Blog, Solo Travel
My morning started at around 1:30 a.m. when I awakened realizing that I had dozed off last night with the TV on.  Yes, I went to bed early, I had eaten too much the night before, remember? Anyway, I ended up watching two good movies that I would have normally avoided because I am not a fan of Nicole Kidman.  I find her to be boring and she seems to select the worse movies.  But I am getting away from the point.  So....I watch M. Night Shyamalan called "Split" and another movie called "Lion".  By this time, it was 5 a.m.  I turned the TV off so there would be no change of getting caught up in another movie. Then I found myself waking up again to the sounds of…

Solo Cruising Day 3: No Commitments

The Norwegian Escape arrived in Falmouth, Jamaica on this morning and I was up and ready for what the day had, in store, for me! I started my day with what is was now beginning to be my ritual--showering and onto the balcony for the au natural drying session as I write my blog. On this day, however, I had to put some pep in my step because I ordered room serviced and I needed to be ready for when my breakfast arrived.  Breakfast on the balcony overlooking the ocean is the best (only if you are on the Starboard side of the ship). My breakfast arrived.  I enjoyed it and the view before exiting the ship.  I had to be at my excursion meet-up spot at 9am. I arrived…

Solo Cruising Day 2: Be In The Moment

Blog, EJtheTravelDiva Blog, Solo Travel
On this day, I slept in until my body naturally woke itself.  What a great feeling to naturally wake on your own with no agenda insight to control your day.  I turned on the T.V. and watched the last half of an animated movie before I finally rolled out of bed, pulled back my curtains to a beautiful view of the ocean--stunning!  The day was beautiful.  Perfect weather.  "This is vacation" I thought to myself.  I opened the balcony door and allowed the sounds of the ocean to fill my room with peaceful bliss.  After showering, instead of drying off with a towel, I sat on my balcony and allowed the natural wind to do it for me.  "It's amazing..." as I think to myself, looking out into the blue…

Day 1: Life Begins At The End Of Your Comfort Zone

The alarm goes off at 3am and I get up to get my travel day going.  I woke up this morning feeling excited and nervous at the same time.  Excited that I am embarking on an adventure and nervous that I am doing it alone. Now, I have traveled alone plenty of times, but once I arrive to my destination, there is usually someone or something waiting for me.  This time, I didn't know what was waiting for me---a good time, sadness, feelings of loneliness.  I wasn't sure, but I was willing to find out. Fist stop, the airport.  I was starving to I grab a table at O'Charley's in the Nashville airport.  My server takes my order and ask where I'm headed.  I reply, "On a cruise."  He responds,…
